I'm currently using Veaam for backups and letting it write to a disk on the OS (the same server as where Veaam is installed). This disk is in fact a VMDK on the QNAP NAS, mounted via NFS. This works like a charm and you do not need to use local temporary files. We run a few servers every night (total is around 1 TB) but after the first operation it becomes incremental, and then a backup job of a whole server takes around 5 minutes.
