I guess you have selected CDROM as your first boot device from BIOS setting. Follow below steps if you haven't
Right Click the VM -> Edit Setting -> Options -> Boot Options and tick the check box next to Force BIOS setup as shown

Once in under Boot-->Boot device priority, change the 1st boot device to CDROM, the BIOS will swap the hard drive to the 2nd boot device automatically.

Device shows as cdrom in host config. Is that the issue should it say cdrom/dvd ? Any suggestions?
No its right though it say cdrom only it will boot from DVD as well.
If still issue persist I would guess you to check whether your DVD is bootable by trying directly on a physical host.
