Re: Workstation 12.5.2: cannot boot from physical disk after VM shutdown

$

Thing is that the vm with a physical disk worked before with this same windows 10 host and vmware workstation version. I only wanted to re-install windows on that vm and use the vm for some other purpose. I also did some other partition maintenance on that hard disk, deleted some other partitions I didn't use. With this I also deleted the physical partition associated with the guest vm. And as done before I recreated a new raw primairy partition with no drive letter assigned and linked it with a new vm, no problems so far. This all worked fine and I could normally install windows to it and even rebooting is no problem.. until I power down the vm. When I power it up again I get the error as shown in the attached image in my opening post. I am known with this error and as suggested in the error you have to remove the hard disk from your vm and add it again, that worked before. But now windows won't boot anymore, but if you boot from the windows installation dvd the setup sees the (physical) hard disk en can even install windows again on it and boot from it... until I power down the vm.

I'm not sure, but it looks like the mapping from the virtual partition to the physical parition is damaged or something when you power down the vm. Or maybe it's something with the master boot record.

Re: Yosemite Guest OS on Sierra Host OS - possible?

Hi Wila

Thanks for the speedy reply. These plugins are all for Apps within the Adobe CC 2015/17 suite, but are not 3d relevant.

So the restriction in place that prevents downgrading to Yosemite on the iMac's actual hardware (which I believe is something to do with the GPU) is irrelevant when it's powering a VM?

Thanks

Hi!

Simplest way I see it: set NTP on the ESXi hosts executing the OpenStack instances. The hwclock in the GuestOS should be passed by the underlying hardware.

Hope this helps!

Where is the "handshakeTimeoutMs" defenition for SSL handshake/timeouts in ESXI 6.X?

$

I was getting this "alarm.HostConnectionStateAlarm changed status from Green to Red " and I remember in ESXi 5.X you would edit that value in /etc/vmware/rhttpproxy/config.xml

however in all the ESXi 6.0 hosts I looked at, none of them have a "handshakeTimeoutMs" definition like they did before.

(Ref: KB 1020210)

Does anyone know where that's defined now in 6.X ?

TIA!

1. SRM documentation: VMware Documentation Library

2. See SRM documentation and EMC SRA documentation for your array & SRA

3. Yes, SRM supports customizing IP addresses as part of failover. Details in the documentation.

4. Cisco OTV allows for a stretched layer 2 network between 2 sites. This would allow for a VM to run at either site with the same IP.

No USB devices connecting with after latest Windows Update

I am running VmWare Workstation 12.5.2 build-4638234 and I have had no issues with connecting USB device until now.

My Windows 10 host was updated to Version 10.0.14986 Build 14986 and since then I cannot connect any USB devices to any of my VMs, Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Windows 10.

I always get a pop-up error message telling me this is a driver error.  Has VmWare tested with the latest build?

Shared Folders Not Connected After Windows Update

Every time my Windows client VMs are updated, Windows Update, the HGFS driver appears to be broken.  I have to uninstall vmware tools and reinstall every time this happens.  Using the option to repair the vmware tools never works.  Is there a fix for this coming in new releases of the vmware tools?

Other than the IP customization being documented in SRM (including the IP customizer tool if used), VMware doesn't provide any other tools/scripts.

You could write some kind of script and run it on the VM. SRM supports running scripts as part of a recovery plan. You could also just have the script run at power on.

Hi,

It is more likely something to do with the CPU and while it is not completely irrelevant, but this is something that a VM can shield off.

If your host has a newer CPU as the guest OS supports then you can actually show the guest OS an older model of the processor.

This is called CPU masking, by masking off the newer features that your guest OS doesn't support, it does not end up getting confused.

Not too long ago there was an issue like that where Oracle refused to run on newer macbooks and it was fixed by CPU masking.

Eg, Re: Fusion and Oracle 12c issue

I would expect that Fusion does the CPU masking on your behalf, not that you would have to edit it by hand and if not you can always report it here and we try to help out.

VM Workstation 12.5.2 issues (vmware-vmx - high cpu utilization & excessive vmdk fragmentation)

$

Recently upgraded to 12.5.2, I have several older (11.x) VMs that I've migrated over from the older version of VMware WS. Newly created VMs are running into the issue described in the title of this thread (I have some newly created VMs that the vmware-vmx.exe runs at 50% of cpu).

Anyone have any suggestions?

sshfs -o ro root@esxi1:/ /esxi

sshfs root@esxi2:/vmfs/volumes/datastoreRecoveryOUT /vmfs-out

I presume that this above is when you want to 'chroot' to enviroment?

I was trying to ddrescue file from datastore to another datastore and it failed. By the way when I used vmfs-fuse to mount datastore which was the outfile (destination path) it was mountend only RO and I i couldn't save the file into it.

I made
1.  vmfs-fuse /dev/sda1 (broken driver with important vmdk file) /mnt/in

2. vmfs-fuse /dev/sdb1 (destination datastore) /mnt/out

after that ddrescue /mnt/in/file.vmdk /mnt/out/file.vmdk

And received error I/O

So now trying to recover but with -d and -r1 as raw file if it works I will be able to mount the raw file in loop to pull the vmdk file.

So Basically  pulling file to file doesn't work all the time.

Update:

After the ddrescue finished It just cloned the disk to file with the same error. So when I tried to fsck.vmfs datastore.raw file I get lots
