What's the CPU series on source and destination ESXi hosts?

Thanks for your reply vanRijn,

I run only in full screen mode, never unity.

The problem happens for me if I do exactly as you describe - full screen Windows (any version), open any application (as you say, Notepad will do) and start typing.  Within 2 minutes the problem has happened a number of times.  You don’t need to swipe in and out of the VM or release the mouse etc.. to experience the problem.

I have had “Host Keyboard Shortcuts” disabled for many years because the keyboard shortcut “CTRL + cursor left”  in Windows is a shortcut I use regularly to scroll backwards through a document word-by-word.  When this setting is on, the Mac shortcut takes over and swipes to the Mac desktop instead.  I prefer to have this setting off and swipe between full screen Windows and Mac using the “four finger drag” method, however I have today turned this back on to see if it improves things and will live with the loss of Windows shortcuts to try this out.

I’ll let you know if it has fixed it.

Re: Unable to open file "/Users/NT-Technics/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows 10 x64.vmwarevm/Virtual Disk.vmdk": What to do?

After entering the following line in Terminal:

sudo /Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmware-vdiskmanager -R /Users/yourusername/Documents/Virtual\ Machines.localized/Windows\ XP.vmwarevm/Windows\ XP.vmdk

and confirming it with Enter, I had to answer with a password. I used the standard installpassword of my Mac.

Try rhttpproxy or hostd log for information same time as the vodb states"Remote access for ESXi local user account 'root' has been locked for 120 seconds... rhttpproxy should give you IP address

Thanks,

VMWare 5.5 vMotion configuration issues

$

Hi all,

I was trying to configure vMotion properly in my new environment and cant seem to get it right, or working for that matter.

I have 3 hosts, each are using 2 x fibre channels (lets call them Fibre A and Fibre B) and 1 x copper port. I have a DVSwitch and various port groups in there; management, iSCSI A, iSCSI B and vMotion all with correct vLans assigned.

I created a vmkernel adapter for vMotion for each host (ticked vMotion box), which is uplinking to Fibre A only. Fibre B and copper are not being used for this.

However, vMotion does not work! I cannot do live migrations. So I Googled through and came across an article saying I'd have to create additional TCP/IP stack for vMotion.

So I created it via CLI  esxcli network ip netstack add -N="vMotion"

Then I created new vmkernel adapter and select the new stack and as soon as I do that, all the available options become greyed out, thus vMotion still does not work.

What am I missing here? Any ideas?

We were in the same boat and decided to pilot Dell/Wyse 5060 running ThinOS. With the introduction of fingerprint scanner redirection in 7.4.0 which is only available for Windows Clients we are considering moving to Dell SFF PC that would be configured in a kiosk mode to just run the Horizon Client. The Horizon Client always get's the latest features and functionality so that is something to consider. You also have to consider your management. Since we already have a large amount of physical PCs it's easier to manage more of those than to add ThinOS.

In my case following the below steps resolved the issues.

Press ctrl+c when services are starting (85%)

/usr/lib/vmware-updatemgr/bin/updatemgr-util refresh-certs

/usr/lib/vmware-updatemgr/bin/updatemgr-util register-vc

Reboot vcsa

We were experiencing this on 7.1.0 We upgraded to 7.4.0 and I'm no longer hearing any reports of it.

Consolidating multiple clusters, on various ESXi versions, with various storage, over various protocols!?

$

We have 4 vSphere clusters, each with their own storage.

1) 4 Host 6.0 cluster, with 11TB of all-flash Tintri storage over NFS via 10GB SFP+ Copper.

2) 3 Host 4.1 cluster, with 27TB of storage over 2 Equallogic crates via 1GB copper and 10GB SFP+ Copper respectively.

3) 4 Host 4.1 cluster, with 8TB of storage over 2 Infortrend crates via fiber channel.

4) 4 Host 4.1 cluster, with 14TB of storage over 2 HP P2000s via fiber channel.

The plan is to add a 5th Host to cluster 1, along with 50TB of storage, probably on 10GB SFP+ Copper via NFS and migrate the VMs from the other 3 clusters onto those hosts and storage.

As for migrating the VMs, I think this is our easiest option, but hoping to get some opinion/suggestions:

- Ensure all VM Port Groups from clusters 2,3 and 4 are trunked and replicated on cluster 1's hosts.

- Open firewall rules to allow Cluster 1's hosts to see and mount Cluster 2's storage.

          - power off all VMs on cluster 2. Remove them from Cluster 2's inventory.

          - add them to Cluster 1's inventory.

          - Storage vMotion them to new Datastores provisioned on the 50TB additional storage

- All a fiber channel card to the new Host 5 in cluster 1.

          - zone that card into the storage fabric of cluster 3 and present the disks, so it can see the Infortrend storage

          - power off all VMs on cluster 4, remove them from Cluster 2's inventory

          - add them to Cluster 1's inventory

          - Storage vMotion them to the new Datastores

Repeat for cluster 4.

We can afford the down time, but is this the easiest way?

Thanks in advance!

Ben

I'm seeing the same problem, but with taking a clone.  I think that there is a job scheduled, but I can't see it so I can't say for sure.

The KB article is from May 29, 2015.  That's about 3 years ago.  Not even a workaround for the problem in all that time?

Sometimes i have the same problem at ESXi 6.5. These problems happen when i leave the session opened in a browser tab (Chrome) on Ubuntu 16.04

To resolve I simple clear browsing data. And the problem goes away.

The encryption is dependent on the user account and the computer through which you create the VICredentialStoreItem.

So or another account, or another computer will not work!

The method I'm using is to use certificate based encryption of the password.

Mike did a good post on this concept, see Encrypt a Password with PowerShell for use by a Different User and/or on a Different Computer

A post describing a similar concept can be found in PowerShell: Encrypt and Decrypt Data by using Certificates (Public Key / Private Key)

Re: Black screen when connecting through PCoIP

We are seeing similar behavior with black screens in 7.3.2. The VM will log you in and the black screen will persist for up to 4 minutes then will clear on its own. I have also experienced black screen on reconnect to a session. This is in an Instant Clone pool running Windows 7 SP1 in a 7.3.2 Horizon environment. Other pools in the same pod running 7.2 Agent do not have this problem.

Interested to hear if others are seeing this.

Say, but wait a minute.

Are you always using account domain_y\user to connect to the vCenter?

And that always from your laptop?

In that case, you can use the New-VICrentialStoreItem.

You can specify an account from another domain than the one in which your laptop is joined.

Even another account then the one with which you are currently authenticated.

New-VICredentialStoreItem-Hostvcenter.domain_y-Userdomain_y\user-PasswordWhatever1!

The only catch is that you can only use that entry in the VICredentialStore when logged on with the same account and on the same computer, from where you created the VICredentialStoreItem
